The Diversity-Multiplexing Tradeoff for Non-Coherent Multiple Antenna Channels∗

Lizhong Zheng, David N. C. Tse · 2002

The diversity-multiplexing tradeoff curve was first proposed in [5] as a comprehensive metric of the system performance, in the high regime. This concept helps us to understand the resources in multiple antenna fading channels in terms of both its ability to provide spatial diversity gain and to accommodate higher data rate. While in [5], the optimal tradeoff curve is computed for the coherent case, in this paper, we compute the optimal diversity-multiplexing tradeoff in the non-coherent block fading multiple antenna channels. We show for a non-coherent system with M transmit and N receive antennas, and a block of length T symbol period over which the channel remains constant, the optimal tradeoff curve is identical to that of a coherent channel with the same number of antennas and coding over a block of length T − M . Furthermore, we show that this optimal tradeoff performance can be achieved by using a particular pilot-based scheme.
