Discovering novel information, that is information whose existence is not suspected or for which suitable descriptors are not known, is di‐cult in large information repositories. The Athens system flnds novel information, given an initial set of keywords representing known information, using a focused and contextualized search. We present the design of the system and show its use in a number of difierent settings.
