Recent psychological debate about the role of logic in human reasoning orientates itself to logical calculi, either by proposing them as mechanisms of reasoning (e.g. Braine, 1978 ) or by rejecting any role for them and proposing to supplant them with purportedly non-formal mechanisms (e.g. Johnson-Laird, 1983 ; Johnson-Laird and Byrne, 1991 ).
