New automotive safety devices based on airbag technologies

This paper presents several devices developed by manufacturer Autoliv, employing the pyrotechnic initiator used in airbag activation. The battery disconnect device isolates a vehicle's power source to prevent unsafe post-collision conditions. The latch release device operates to open the hood, or bonnet, of a car. The pin puller allows a steering wheel column to be collapsed in an impact to alleviate the load transferred to the driver's body. The radial-folded bellows is a linear actuator developed to raise the hood of a car as part of a pedestrian protection system; these actuators can then absorb energy by crushing back onto themselves. The on-demand pressure relief valve provides both passive and active relief to vent high-pressure gas or liquid lines. For the covering abstract see ITRD E127621.
