A Hierarchy of Detail for Representing Non-Convex Curved Objects

B. Martinez, Angel Pasqual del Pobil · Industrial and Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems · 2022

Spatial representations are a bottleneck for real-world applications involving increasingly more complex geometries, in such a way that more efficient ways of representing objects are called for. Hierarchies of detail based on spheres seem a powerful approach to overcome this problem. A representation for non-convex objects with curved surfaces is presented, which is independent of the number of features used for the polyhedral model of the object. It easily lends itself to parallel implementations and can also be used in connection with computer vision approaches that use generalized cylinders.
