Visualization support for risk-informed decision making when planning and managing software developments

Martin S. Feather, James D. Kiper, Tim Menzies · 2005

Key decisions are made in the early stages of planning and management of software developments. The information basis for these decisions is often a mix of analogy with past developments, and the best judgments of domain experts. Visualization of this information can support to such decision making by clarifying the status of the information and yielding insights into the ramifications of that information vis-à-vis decision alternatives. We illustrate this in the context of a risk-based model developed and applied at NASA for planning the development of systems that use advanced technologies, and for research and technology portfolio planning. Categories and Subject Descriptors C.4 [Performance of Systems] – design studies, modeling techniques, reliability, availability, and serviceability
