The principles underlying the development of an automatic draft gage for use on ro/ro ferries are discussed. The methods used to manually read draft marks are first explored, pointing out the errors that can arise from their use. The components and operation of an automatic draft gage system are then fully described. The strict rules governing installation of such systems are discussed and certain operational problems that have been encountered are listed.
