Daniel N. Aloi, P E Dessert, Luke Fay, Matt Ronning, M. Willer · GPS world · 2003

This article focuses on Bluetooth technology, discussing the advantages that are present when the Bluetooth wireless technology is used in a vehicle's Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver. An overview of telematics is first given, focusing on two approaches to in-vehicle telematics architectures. Bluetooth technology is then described, looking at piconets, error detection, and profiles. A review of GPS features are presented, with focus on data formats, transmission time, and navigation. The authors then examine critical issues that arise when a GPS receiver is combined with Bluetooth. Areas of discussion include power, noise, sensitivity, data transfer, latency concerns.
