Eastern Europe Breaks New Ground

Eusebiu Catana · ITS International · 2005

In this article, the author describes the Romanian capital Bucharest's implementation of a US$27.3 million ITS system that integrates traffic and public transport management. This system combines an adaptive urban traffic control (UTC) system with a public transport management (PTM) system in a purpose-designed supporting infrastructure. This endeavor, called the ITS Multi-Sector Project, involved five main elements: the installation of the UTC which coordinates traffic signals along a main artery, a digitized road network, improvement of 90 signalized intersections, signalization priority for public service vehicles (PSV), and a central control room for operations control. The article gives explicit figures of the PTM-UTC interface and hardware architectures, the radio communications architecture, and outlines the benefits from the project.
