Causal Models in Medical Intelligence.

Perry L. Miller · PubMed Central · 1987

Most medical artificial intelligence systems involve “surface models” of their domains rather than “causal models” of the underlying physiologic and pathophysiologic processes. Several projects, however, have been exploring how more fundamental knowledge of the domain, such as causal knowledge, might help a computer reason about medical problems in a more sophisticated fashion. The paper first outlines some of the research issues involved in medical causal modeling, and then describes specific projects which are exploring these issues.
