Strong Consumer Interest in GPS for Traffic, Nav, LBS

Clement J. Driscoll · GPS world · 2006

This article gives an overview of consumer interest in Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and related products. The author found that, while factory-installed systems are not selling as well as many would like, the portable navigation device (PND) market has been growing and is predicted to continue to do so. This being said, factory-installed systems have a higher satisfaction rate among those who have previously owned such systems. Cellular telephone-installed systems likewise receive positive feedback from owners; although not to the same extent as portable or vehicle-installed versions. Many consumers, however, are interested in GPS that would provide traffic information to them directly through their phone, albeit with the caveat that these systems could monitor their location. Cellular/GPS technologies would be distributed by location-based service (LBS).
