APPLICATIONS OF A FIELDLEVEL GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (FIS) IN PRECISION AGRICULTURE

N. Q. Zhang, Randal K. Taylor · Applied Engineering in Agriculture · 2001

A fieldlevel geographic information system (FIS) designed specifically for research in precision agriculture hasbeen under development at Kansas State University for several years. This article summarizes the analytical functionsprovided by FIS and gives two examples to illustrate its applications in precision agriculture. The first example studies yieldresponse to soil electric conductivity using mathematical/logic query and simple statistics functions. The second exampledemonstrates two methods for delineating management zones. The first method uses the buffer function of FIS to formmorphological opening and closing filters. The second method is based on spectral analysis of the grid maps. Lowpass filtersin the frequency domain and query functions are used to delineate the management zones. The management zones derivedusing the two methods were similar.
