GPS SPEEDS DATA COLLECTION ON GIS ROAD NETWORKS

Stephen P. Prisley, J S Carruth · 1995

Data collection on actual travel times can be inordinately expensive. However, Global Positioning Systems (GPS) provide time and location data, so they can be used as travel time data recorders. This paper presents an application that utilized GPS units, which were mounted on log trucks. The units collected data that was then loaded into a geographic information system (GIS). This data was used to create attributes for a road network, in order to aid truck routing applications. This type of data collection can be undertaken during normal logging activities, without addition personnel. The data can also be used to verity the spatial accuracy of the road network.
