Companies are demanding improved transparency of their order status, inventory, and shipments across the supply chain. This paper describes the main aspects of monitoring goods in freight transport including the drivers and concepts for monitoring, the models for tracking and data collection as well as related state-of-the-art technologies. Four different models for the monitoring service are presented: the black box model, the notification model, the ID model and the continuous monitoring model. The presented unified description of the models and related technologies facilitates the understanding of potential solutions as an enabler of improved monitoring. The main difference between the models is the frequency of monitoring data updates.
