Fault Tolerant Parallel Image Generation on a Workstation Network
K. Mazouni, G. de Raad · 1993
Image generation for computer movies is a good candidate application for parallelisation. This application was used as a starting point to design a fault tolerant distributed computing environment aimed to run parallel applications. The paper first describes the context of this work, then it presents the requirements that the environment should meet. The paper then describes the use of the Distributed Resource Manager for the design of a first prototype. 1 Introduction Parallel applications are usually run on parallel computers. The major drawback of this approach is the cost of the underlying hardware. Although hardware costs are decreasing, parallel machines remain expensive. The development of network technology leads to consider distributed systems to run parallel applications. This paper presents the Calc// project aimed to design a fault tolerant distributed software environment suited to run parallel programs. A first prototype of the Calc// environment was developed and tested...
