UTC systems are now benefiting from advances in road telematics and traffic information systems. Urban trip management must nowadays be comprehensive and integrated. The following account of the State of the Art describes French techniques in the areas of traffic control, bus priority and user information. Informing and acting are now the key words in UTC. The addition of technical management and maintenance completes the picture. This paper covers not only the present state of the art by describing existing systems and algorithms but also the major research for urban networks in France.
