Prioritized dialogue in CSMA/CD networks with provision for message cancellation

The hierarchical structure of network architecture should imply that any upper level function can be implemented easily and efficiently in terms of lower layer primitives, but an attempt to synchronize parallel processors on Ethernet by CSP communication constructs does not support the above assumption. The inadequacy of lower level Ethernet protocols is explained, and a minimum set of extensions is proposed to permit a brief but uninterrupted dialogue essential for prompt, reliable data interchange. It is argued that these modifications are basic for a broad range of higher functions and should be adopted as general extensions to the proposed CSMA/CD standard. 5 references.
