Using the semantics of prepositions for ontology learning

Vincent Jacobs · Utrecht University Repository (Utrecht University) · 2006

To help automate the process of ontology creation, computational linguists have been working to develop methods that extract ontology elements from natural language. Their focus thus far has been mainly on relation extraction; linguistic elements frequently used for this purpose are nouns, verbs and adjectives. Prepositions have been fairly unpopular by comparison, probably due to their polysemous nature and elusive semantics. This thesis demonstrates progress can be made in this field by selective application of prepositions in relation extraction and discusses ways in which semantic annotation projects like PropBank and FrameNet can be included in the process.
