Software defined processing of globalpositional data for serial communication

Modern automotive systems rely on serial communication between internal components to exchange sensor and control data. In applications involving navigation, modules producing positional data may need to be transmitted using the same serial communication. This thesis presents the development of a positional data processing system intended to provide a customizable alternative to closed-source commercial solutions. The proposed implementation consists of a fixed hardware setup with software developed to process the positional data to allow it to be transmitted with the communication protocol used by most automotive vehicles today. The software defined system was designed with minimal overhead and was evaluated using both stationary and mobile test setups. Performance was compared against the closest related commercial solution using metrics such as startup time, message interval, and positional drift. The proposed implementation proved to be, in some cases, more accurate than the closest related commercial solution. However, it also showed transmission instability compared to the commercial solution. The results demonstrate that a lightweight and internally maintainable system is feasible using embedded hardware, although further development is required to improve overall stability.
