Agentic AI: Autonomous Systems Reshaping the Enterprise
Deepti Chaudhary, Atul Singh · Apress eBooks · 2026
Enterprises are moving from systems that simply execute predefined instructions to agentic AI that can sense, reason, and act with bounded autonomy. An AI agent is a system that can understand its environment, make decisions, and take actions to achieve specific goals—without needing a human to guide every step. Unlike traditional automation, which follows rigid, predefined rules, an AI agent can reason, adapt, and use tools or data to decide what to do next. In simple terms, it’s an intelligent software “assistant” that can plan, act, and learn through human-guided updates, feedback loops, and model improvements, rather than autonomous retraining in production. Across enterprise platforms, AI agents are defined less by vendor tooling and more by a shared architectural model: what the agent knows, how it reasons, and what actions it is permitted to take. Whether implemented on Microsoft, AWS, Google Cloud, or open-source stacks, production-grade agents combine language model reasoning with enterprise data access, explicit permissions, tool invocation, and continuous observation within defined guardrails.
