Intuitive Biostatistics with Python
Sébastien Wieckowski · 2026
Abstract Data is everywhere, including in biomedical research laboratories; and in this field, too, it has grown (in general and in complexity) in recent years. Unfortunately, the “wet lab” professionals who generate this mass of information are not optimally equipped to handle and fully exploit their data. This book aims to help PhD students, laboratory technicians, researchers, engineers, group leaders, as well as lecturers and physicians, to acquire the basics of Python sufficiently to exploit the statistical analysis and visualization tools offered by this programming language. This is not a pure statistics book but a tutorial that will guide the reader to: install the Python software and essential packages on their computer; reproduce the analyses, thanks to the fully explained and commented code snippets and “cheat sheets”; and understand better the functioning of biostatistical methods and tools, such as confidence intervals, P value, distributions like the Gaussian, t-tests, survival analysis, simulations, regression, ANOVA and meta-analysis—thus adding new dimension to their data and publications. The specificity of this book is that the author is himself a “wet lab” scientist, self-taught in data science and that it is aimed at professionals in the field of life and health sciences, with examples and case studies taken from this field. Ultimately, this book inspires the reader to delve deeper into machine learning (or artificial intelligence), use Python to create a website or control a robot, or expand their knowledge of other programming languages.
