Bayesian Models in ContextWhat scope and limitations do Bayesian models have within the study of behavior and of the brain? In this concluding chapter, we describe how Bayesian models of perception and action connect to bigger themes in the field of behavioral research and beyond. We also discuss limitations of the modeling framework in this book and suggest future directions for the field. Plan of the ChapterWe first suggest that Bayesian behaviors can plausibly be expected to emerge over lifetime and evolutionary time scales. However, it is also reasonable to expect that not all Bayesian behavior is optimal and indeed that not all behavior is Bayesian. We discuss how Bayesian models of perception and action differ from and relate to other classes of popular models within cognitive science and neuroscience. We discuss how "as if " criticisms of Bayesian models can be addressed. We conclude with open areas of research: real-world complexity, learning to be Bayesian, and approximate inference.
