The characteristics of a one-dimensional nerve net of homogeneous structure with monotonically decreasing coupling coefficients are discussed, along with the synthesis methods of realizing the nerve nets. When an excitation input is applied to a neuronlike element in the nerve net, the excitation pattern is transformed into one of stable patterns and propagates in one direction. This indicates that the nerve net possesses pattern shaping and recognizing functions. It is also found from the network synthesis that the nerve net is not always realizable if all rules of the pattern variations are given, but it is always realizable when a set of stable excitation patterns is specified.
