A Primer on the African Context
Iwalola Sobowale, Lade Tawak, Hillary Omitogun · 2026
This chapter examines the diverse socioeconomic and cultural factors that shape the African user experience. We explore how demographics, income disparities, mobile penetration, digital literacy levels, limited internet access, and sociocultural nuances influence product adoption and usability. We introduce practical tools, including a comprehensive problem-identification guide and a localization checklist that builders can use to evaluate their own digital solutions and accurately diagnose whether the problem is a usability issue or an accessibility issue. We argue that accessibility is the primary barrier to adoption and show how this leads to creating relevant, resilient products that seamlessly integrate into the daily lives and existing behaviors of their target audience.
