Soil Classification for Soil Survey

Brian E. Butler · Medical Entomology and Zoology · 1980

This is a book about soil classification and how the soil surveyor creates a list of soil classes that will comprise all the soil in the area he is to map. The author discusses the purpose of soil survey, the exact work which is to be carried out and the use which may be made of the results. Existing problems in soil survey and the concept of orderliness in the soil population are considered. In an effort to establish a soil classification for a particular local soil survey, a number of major innovations are introduced to rectify some of the defects of customary practice, including the low order of predictability which exists in some cases. In the final chapter a review is presented of several national classifications. (TRRL)
