Generative AI and Information Management in Singapore SMEs: A Practical Framework for Adoption, Governance, and Workforce Readiness
Marianna Olefyrenko · 2026
Generative artificial intelligence is changing how organisations create, retrieve, analyse, and use information. For small and medium-sized enterprises in Singapore, generative AI offers practical opportunities to improve productivity, customer engagement, knowledge management, marketing, data analysis, internal communication, and decision-making. However, successful adoption is not only a question of choosing the right AI tools. It is also an information management challenge involving data quality, workflow design, employee readiness, governance, privacy, human oversight, and evaluation. This working paper examines generative AI from the perspective of an AI practitioner working with business users and digital products. It proposes a practical framework for Singapore SMEs that want to adopt generative AI in a responsible and measurable way. The framework focuses on six areas: identifying business use cases, preparing information assets, designing human-AI workflows, building AI literacy, managing risks, and measuring outcomes. The Version 1.2 SME Practitioner Edition adds practical quick-start guidance, quick-win use cases, a 30-60-90 day adoption plan, sample prompt templates, a one-page AI usage policy template, and a simple results tracker for SMEs that want to save time and see measurable results quickly. The paper is written for SME leaders, educators, AI practitioners, trainers, information management professionals, and business teams seeking a practical introduction to generative AI adoption. It argues that SMEs should treat AI adoption as an organisational capability rather than a one-time technology purchase. When implemented thoughtfully, generative AI can help SMEs make better use of their information, reduce repetitive work, improve service quality, and strengthen workforce readiness for an AI-enabled economy.
