The Consumer Pain Points with AI

Idil Miriam Cakim · 2026

The chapter traces the fault lines shaping consumers’ uneasy relationship with artificial intelligence (AI). Rapid adoption masks deeper tensions: skills gaps that fuel fear, authenticity gaps that erode trust and control gaps that trigger privacy anxiety and information fatigue. Across workplaces, media environments and daily life, people are negotiating systems that accelerate faster than their habits, often without transparency or consent. These pressures manifest as dissonance – overgeneralized distrust, authenticity angst and a growing algorithmophobia, as consumers seek utility without surrendering agency. Trust is not only a soft value but also a design principle that is ingrained in every facet of AI-related interactions. Inclusive onboarding, human‑led content development, transparent data practices and autonomy‑preserving interfaces can close the AI adoption loop. When systems align with human expectations, supporting and giving people control, AI serves as an enabler. The opportunity for marketers and developers is to build AI experiences that empower people.
