Oleksandr Kozubov · Vytautas Magnus University · 2026

The increasing popularity of online marketplaces in our day and age has changed the way people exchange items and services among each other. However, most existing marketplace solutions were designed with broader audiences in mind and don’t specifically address the needs of university students. Students often are in the need of affordable second-hand products such as textbooks, electronics, dormitory equipment, etc., while also needing a trustworthy and convenient communication environment. The aim of this work is to design, implement, and evaluate a student-oriented online marketplace platform which was named UniSwap. The developed system provides functionality for user registration and authentication, listing creation and management, real-time messaging, profile management, image uploading, category-based searching, filtering, as well as location support. The system was implemented using various technologies: React.js for the frontend, Node.js and Express.js for the backend, PostgreSQL for database management, Socket.IO for real-time communication, and Cloudinary for cloud-based image storage. System modeling methods, including: UML diagrams and Entity–Relationship modeling were applied during the design phase. The developed platform successfully combines marketplace and communication functionality in a single application which is focused on university students. System testing demonstrated that features operate correctly and provide stable performance for a user. The results that were obtained indicate that specialized student-oriented marketplace systems can improve usability, simplify communication, and provide a more focused environment for exchanging goods within local university communities.
