Security challenges in large-scale IoT systems

Sowmya T. Rao, Anuj Kumar · 2026

The untapped explosion of the Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionized industries and everyday life by connecting a vast collection of heterogeneous devices into vast, evolving networks that energize applications ranging from smart cities to industrial automation, healthcare, and intelligent transportation. But this is a massive scale, and heterogeneity brings enormous security challenges that conventional security models can barely manage. This chapter explains the distinctive capabilities of security threats of large-scale IoT implementations, starting with a critical examination of their multi-level hierarchies, including a large range of constrained devices, communication protocols, and cloud-edge systems, all of which contribute to developing an extensive attack surface. It also examines the diversity of cyberattacks specific to such environments, including distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, hijacking of devices, data breaches, spoofing, and physical tampering, emphasizing how attackers assault weaknesses in the perception, network, and application layers. With the resource constraints and scalability requirements of IoT devices, the chapter discusses existing standards and customized security solutions such as lightweight cryptography, identity and access management schemes, machine learning-based anomaly detection, blockchain for trust establishment, and decentralized security frameworks. How much of this new technology, such as edge and fog computing, in achieving localized security controls and real-time response to threats, is helpful is also discussed. Realistic case studies of industrial and smart city IoT deployments offer tangible illustrations of security issues and mitigation techniques in actual large-scale deployments. Lastly, the chapter offers future work directions such as quantum-resistant cryptography, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based adaptive defense solutions, and looking for unifying security frameworks that can evolve with the fast-paced era of IoT. Along the way, images and formal analysis make it possible to have a solid grip, providing readers with the information they require to survive and obtain today&s;s and tomorrow&s;s complex-scale, state-of-the-art IoT systems.
