Multitarget Tracking by Airborne Radar Systems

Vyacheslav Tuzlukov · 2026

This chapter deals with multitarget tracking problems by the airborne radar systems. The operation peculiarities of the airborne radar system under the multitarget tracking are discussed. Much attention is paid to the main approaches for multitarget tracking mode realization by the real airborne radar systems. Trajectory beginning (detection) is the decision-making process about taking a new target that appears within the limits of the airborne radar system zone of responsibility for tracking. In this chapter, we present two main methods of target trajectory beginning, which are widely used in practice. These methods are the tracking window and sequential sample method. Advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed in detail. The identification of measurements is one of the main stages of any multitarget tracking system and defines its efficiency. The modern identification algorithms are discussed in detail. Extrapolation of the target trajectories plays a very important role under the multitarget tracking by the fighter airborne radar systems because owing to the prediction process for all state coordinates relatively, the target moving that is used for issuing the aircraft plane control commands or the target area designation signals for controlled weapons. Additionally, we discuss the algorithms of target trajectory parameter correction. Much attention is paid to the multitarget tracking with the strobes of authentification for measurements (target return signals) and α , β -filtering.
