Strategies for Implementing Human-Centered AI

Raghu Vijay Kowshik, Peter Jay Sorenson · 2026

Human-centered artificial intelligence (AI) is not just a design philosophy—it is a global imperative. This chapter explores how to move from aspiration to action, offering concrete strategies for embedding ethics, societal impact, and human well-being into every phase of AI development, from design to deployment. At its core, human-centered AI prioritizes fairness, inclusivity, and accountability, ensuring that these technologies empower individuals and serve the common good—especially those historically marginalized or underserved. Through global case studies, from UNICEF&s;s AI-powered anti-trafficking efforts and IBM&s;s Watson for Oncology to Seoul&s;s intelligent transit systems and Microsoft&s;s accessibility innovations, we see how AI can be intentionally designed to uplift, include, and protect. These examples underscore a powerful truth: When ethics and accessibility are built into the foundation of AI systems, technology becomes a tool for equity, not exclusion. But realizing this vision requires more than isolated success stories. It demands sustained, cross-sector collaboration and a shared commitment to transparency, responsiveness, and human dignity. This chapter offers a roadmap for building AI systems that don&s;t just solve problems—they promote justice, sustainability, and collective well-being across borders and communities.
