The capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) have grown exponentially in recent times. This growth can be attributed to the increase in computing power, enabling the technology to analyse larger amounts of data than ever before. The improved abilities of AI to make autonomous decisions and behave human-like have attracted more users to explore the technology and its possibilities. This has led to a situation where AI is being used in a growing number of situations, whether it is to help in everyday human tasks or to support decision making in large organisations. The increased use of the technology has evoked mixed feelings about the effects it may have on humanity. This is why the role of trust in AI is crucial, as it affects the attitudes towards the changes caused by the technology. Moreover, whether individuals emphasise the challenges or opportunities of AI depends on the level of trust in the technology. This literature review focuses on consolidating the role of trust in AI. The findings are assessed from multiple perspectives, including how trust influences the use of AI, and what factors influence the level of trust in AI. In addition, this thesis focuses on the practical implications of the association between trust and AI in order to make the findings comprehensible in various contexts. To conclude, understanding the complex connections between trust and AI is essential for future developments as the technology continues to evolve and affect different aspects of our lives.
