SOM: Structural Observation Module — Technical Specification v1.1

Kon Lionis · Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research) · 2026

SOM (Structural Observation Module) is the telemetry layer of the Hykon Symbolic Operating System (S-OS), a proposed runtime governance architecture for conversational AI systems. The module performs real-time extraction of structural stability signals from the conversational interaction stream, producing normalized diagnostic state for downstream stability analysis. SOM operates only on observable interaction output and does not require access to model weights, internal activations, or hidden states. SOM is motivated by the principle of Surface–Latent Isomorphism: the working hypothesis that some stability-relevant properties of latent reasoning dynamics may be reflected in observable conversational structure. By measuring structural features of generated text across turns, the module derives diagnostic signals intended to support assessment of the ongoing conversational trajectory. The module extracts three primary signals: Semantic Velocity (‖γ̇‖): directional drift in semantic space across turns Boundary Curvature (κ): structural pressure as a conversational trajectory approaches epistemic or ethical limits Coherence Gradient (∇C): change in logical and structural consistency across a conversational window These signals form a compact telemetry state for use by downstream modules in the Hykon S-OS architecture, including: BCSM — Boundary-Coherence Structural Module, for structural stability modelling LTD-01 — Trajectory-State Diagnostic Classifier, for trajectory classification Regulatory Operators — for stabilisation and safety enforcement SOM is designed to remain: Non-agentic: it observes but does not intervene Model-agnostic: it operates only on the interaction stream Deterministic: it produces auditable structural diagnostics Privacy-preserving by design: it prioritizes structural form and does not require access to model internals Within the proposed Hykon runtime governance loop, SOM serves as the observation layer, providing telemetry for stability diagnostics without directly modifying model behaviour.
