In this study, the nonlinear 2D logistic chaotic map is used in an efficient and effective way for the encryption of digital images. In most of encryption algorithms, images are exposed for confusion and diffusion process at pixel level to form a cipher image. In this scheme, the chaotic sequences generated by 2D logistic chaotic map in combination with bit pair rotation are used for confusion and diffusion processes. Original image is disturbed at both pixel level and bit level to form a more reliable and strong cipher. The scheme is verified against the test images taken from the USC-SIPI image database. The simulation results of the quality parameters, favorable outcomes of theoretical value tests, and comparative analysis with the existing encryption schemes verify the reliability and robustness of the proposed encryption approach.
