Self-healing Software Systems: Adaptive Fault Tolerance in Distributed Environments

S. (Saleh) Algayev · Neliti · 2025

But in an age of complex, highly distributed systems, the goal remains the same: always-on, reliable service. Self-healing systems has been proposed as a solution to the issue, which allows the system to automatically monitor and diagnose failures and recover from these failures without human involvement. This position paper discusses adapting fault tolerance in distributed settings and the properties that allow a system to retain working capacity in the presence of failures. We then survey a variety of emerging design patterns, algorithms, and real-world examples to outline the progression and limitations of self-healing in practice. Our study highlights the importance of incorporating self-healing mechanisms to strengthen the systems' robustness and minimize their downtimes (Nikolic et al., 2020).
