Intra-Genres in Non-Traditional Authorship Attribution
Joseph Rudman · 2026
The definition of intra-genres (nested genres) is given – examples are provided. The absolute necessity of controlling for intra-genres by eliminating them from all corpora is emphasized. The unfortunate fact that most non-traditional authorship attribution studies ignore intra-genres is discussed. Examples are given of studies that control for intra-genres. DocuScope is discussed as a way to make genre visible at the sentence level. The question, “Do stylistically distinguishable characters within a novel constitute an intra-genre?” is grappled with. The concept of genre families is emphasized.
