At the end of Volume 1, we investigated the pros and cons of both symbolic artificial intelligence (AI) and connectionist AI. There is another option known as neuro-symbolic AI or the combination of the two major approaches. The two approaches can be viewed as a top-down approach and a bottom-up approach to developing a model of the human mind. Symbolic AI produces intelligent behavior and connectionist AI can understand behavior. It is important to understand that both approaches start with data. Data is the building block for data science, data mining, and AI.
