Enhancing autonomous car's driving system performance using RTOS

D. Janaki Sathya, M. Sai Dhanush · 2026

Strong, high-performance embedded systems capable of executing tasks in real time are essential to meet the growing demand for autonomous vehicles. This work integrates FreeRTOS, a real-time operating system, to enhance multitasking capabilities and embedded controller performance in autonomous vehicles. FreeRTOS ensures effective task prioritization, enabling rapid responses to environmental changes and sensor data. The system’s motors, ultrasonic sensors, and visual and auditory indicators are managed by an ATMega2560 embedded controller to detect obstacles and provide feedback to the user. Simulations demonstrate improved responsiveness, reliability, and maintainability compared to non-RTOS implementations, highlighting the potential for advanced real-time task management in autonomous driving. Future plans include further optimization, the integration of additional sensors, improvements in power efficiency, and practical testing.
