Automatic control of threaded stud welding in cabinet assembly for electrical car charging stations

Giuseppe Santoro, Ernesto Erra, Michael Nicolella · Procedia CIRP · 2026

One critical phase in the assembly of cabinets for electrical car charging stations is the manual capacitor discharge welding of threaded studs on the metal sheets forming the cabinet doors. If all the studs are rightly positioned, possess a good thread quality, and have the correct orthogonality, the rest of the cabinet components can be properly assembled. The “Log.in” project of the Protom company aims to develop a cost-effective solution to automatize the control of (a) the presence of all studs on the metal sheets; (b) the stud orthogonality within the tolerance range; (c) the stud threading quality.
