This thesis reports on a canonical action research project with the goal of improving the software requirements specification practices in a small but growing organization. Being aware of the requirements of a software system is paramount in making sure that they are fulfilled and therefore the user needs are met. The thesis provides answers to the following research questions [1] What perceived problems are there in the organization’s software requirements specification process? [2] Can the recognized issues impede the growth of the organization’s software team, and if so, how? [3] What are the discernible effects of the introduction of new software requirements specification practices? [4] Did the introduced changes support the growth of the organization? The main findings of the study are that insufficient information about software requirements can lead to miscommunications and a lack of knowledge transfer. The results suggest that creating a source of persistent information about the software can facilitate improvement in the software requirements specification process and enable further process improvements.
