Extending the Application of Meaning Arrangement Structural Analysis (MASA) A Chronological Survey of Fifteenth-Century Manuscripts with Provisional Functional Classification

Description English This preprint extends the application of Meaning Arrangement Structural Analysis (MASA), a structural methodology for the study of medieval manuscripts that operates independently of linguistic decipherment or semantic interpretation. Building on the prior study “Applying MASA to Undeciphered Medieval Manuscripts: Provisional Functional Analyses of the Voynich Manuscript and the Rohonc Codex, with an Execution Log” (Zenodo, 2025), this work examines whether MASA can be applied to a broader range of medieval texts beyond isolated undeciphered cases. A selection of manuscripts dating from the late fourteenth to early sixteenth centuries—encompassing both deciphered and undeciphered examples—is analyzed using a uniform MASA procedure. The manuscripts are arranged chronologically, and their compatibility with MASA is evaluated based solely on observable layout-level features such as segmentation, repetition, positional constraints, and non-narrative organization. Rather than proposing interpretations or translations, this study provides provisional functional characterizations that describe how each manuscript appears to operate structurally. An explicit set of applicability criteria is included (Appendix A) to clarify the conditions under which MASA is informative and reproducible. The results indicate that MASA applicability correlates more strongly with operational and procedural structure than with historical period, language, or decipherment status. This preprint is intended as a methodological reference for structural analysis in manuscript studies, rather than as a contribution to decipherment. 先行研究『Applying MASA to Undeciphered Medieval Manuscripts: Provisional Functional Analyses of the Voynich Manuscript and the Rohonc Codex, with an Execution Log』(Zenodo, 2025)において、MASAが未解読写本に対しても暫定的な機能的特徴の同定を可能にすることが示された。
