Designing a Camera System for a Third-Person Virtual Reality Game : Investigating The Use of The Third-Person Perspective And Dynamic Camera Movement in VR
Eevi Karjalainen · Theseus (Ammattikorkeakoulujen) · 2025
This project was about developing a third-person character controller for virtual reality and documenting the design process. It focused on third-person camera design and virtual reality locomotion simultaneously. The development included making the character model, prototyping a character controller, and making variants based on the initial prototype. All while keeping a project diary. There were nine versions of the character controllers developed, all with their problems in usability and comfort. Still, by approaching the topic through a project and evaluating the design process through a diary, I documented obstacles others might face when developing third-person VR games. The value of this project lies not so much in the successful execution of the character controller, or the evaluation of the results, given their anecdotal nature, but in shedding light on the design process by highlighting the risks, concepts, and tools involved.
