From Wireframes to Interfaces: Developing a Practical Framework for UI/UX Design

Natarajan, Janani · Doria (University of Helsinki) · 2025

This thesis develops a unified, structured framework that guides novice and experienced practitioners through the complete UI/UX design process, from initial concept to high-fidelity interface. It addresses a notable gap in existing design literature and resources. Merging foundational theory with applied practice emphasizes a user-centered methodology that is adaptable and comprehensive. This research explores fundamental UI/UX principles, including mental models, affordances, heuristic evaluation, and accessibility. These concepts are contextualized through a comprehensive literature review and qualitative interviews with professional designers, which reveal practical challenges and best practices encountered in real-world scenarios. The theoretical groundwork is applied in a case study project, CoStudy, demonstrating a complete design cycle that encompasses user modeling, iterative wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing. Additionally, the case study is enhanced by user surveys and feedback that illuminate the decision-making process and emphasize the vital importance of user research in developing intuitive and inclusive interfaces. By integrating theoretical insights, professional experience, and applied design practice, the thesis offers a pragmatic and ethically grounded framework for UI/UX design. It underscores iterative refinement, accessibility, and empathy as essential pillars of effective interface development, ultimately contributing a valuable reference for creating meaningful, user-driven digital experiences.
