A smart space is able to acquire knowledge about its environment and adapt to its inhabitants in order to increase their quality of personal experience in the space. The recent technological advances have made smart spaces truly feasible, for instance, in applications where the surrounding conditions in a space need to be controlled efficiently to maximize the comfort of each individual. This has evoked the idea of creating individual conditions in an intelligent environment. A demo space capable of demonstrating the ability of a smart environment to provide individual conditions in a space was implemented in the lobby of Aalto University Design Factory. The individual conditions are created by determining the location of people in the space and adjusting the ambient lighting, music, and temperature accordingly. The demo space is equipped with a capacitive sensor floor that is used for determining the presence and location of people. The system is also capable of identifying the user by utilizing RFID technology and setting the surrounding conditions that the identified person had in use during his previous visit to the space. The constructed demo space is capable of demonstrating the idea of creating individual conditions in a smart environment. However, its reliability and the usability have to be improved in order to make it more appealing. It was concluded that in addition to the capacitive sensor floor, additional presence detection methods should he utilized to improve the occupancy detection reliability and thereby the performance of the entire system. Also the design process of a smart space should take a more user-centred approach to ensure maximal comfort and the aesthetic appeal of the environment and its devices, as well as making the functions of the smart space clearly visible and understandable.
