The change from GSM networks to third generation (3G) networks brings new requirements for the use of WAP applications. Implementations that have been done for the previous versions do not necessarily fit to the new environment, nor are they efficient. WAP protocol supports circuit switched networks and it is optimized for a narrow bandwidth and quite long network delays. The bandwidth has increased and delays have decreased along with the 3G network and, in addition, traffic has become packet switched. TCP/IP supports better packet switched traffic than WAP protocol and this is a more inherent option for 3G networks. Internet applications are possible to implement with the same programming languages for both wired and wireless Internet. This makes for a cost efficient programming environment. The object of this study is to compare the performance of the WAP and TCP/IP protocol WAP applications in the 3G network. The aim is to study how well different protocols can utilize the performance of the 3G network. Measurements are conducted in the Nokia test network. The first section introduces the UMTS network, why it was implemented and describes both UMTS network architecture and WCDMA radio technology. Then WAP and TCP/IP protocols are presented and how they are optimized to the wireless environment. The measurement section introduces the used tools, the measurement environment, and then we analyse and compare the measurement results. Finally, we draw conclusions from our study.
