Using various optimization techniques ranging from the removal of dead code to major code transformations, compilers can reduce the overall code size as well as achieve faster execution speeds in their outputs generated from user provided source code. This thesis a number of optimization techniques applied by modern compilers as well as one domain specific technique proposed in literature will be implemented and extended to be applicable in a compiler of the reversible programming language SyReC. Furthermore, their effects will be quantified by an evaluation using a set of benchmarks built from examples taken from literature as well as custom defined ones. From these results we can conclude that the optimization techniques takes from existing compilers did have an almost negligle effect on the used evaluation metrics while the domain specific one showed promising results. The latter led to the generation of code that was either equal to or better for most benchmarks when compared to its unoptimized version using our evaluation metrics. We conclude this thesis with a discussion of the found problems in our implementation that led to worse results for some of the benchmarks and will also suggests directions for future works.
