Using the Monochord: a Classroom Demonstration on the Mathematics of Musical Scales

Sheila Haak · Mathematics Teacher Learning and Teaching PK-12 · 1982

Many students have been told that mathematics and music are strongly related. But have they heard or seen this wonderful relationship? Those who know the musical scale (do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do) and can handle ratios will be fascinated as they apply mathematics to music. More advanced students will have the opportunity to apply their work with algebra and logarithms to musical scales. A single-stringed instrument, the monochord, demonstrates the mathematics of musical scales.
