Providing Quality of Service over InfiniBandTM Architecture Fabrics

The provision of Quality of Service (QoS) in data communication networks is currently the center of much discussion and research in the industry. InfiniBandTM Architecture (IBA) enables QoS support through a rich set of mechanisms to segregate traffic flows into traffic classes and to provide hop level forwarding control over these individual classes. This paper describes the QoS problem and describes a generalized approach to its solution. The IBA mechanisms applicable to QoS are described in relation to the generalized model. Finally, the Differentiated Services architecture, as described in RFC 2475, is introduced and an overview of a possible implementation of DiffServ over IBA is described.
