The memory contained in the OMIS may be either communal (shared) or idiosyn- cratic (representing only one individual's experience). A communal organizational memory describes information elicited from groups of people who make decisions that affect their organization and is derived from a consensus of the decision-makers' opinions. Idiosyncratic organizational memory contains information elicited from each individual decision-maker. In this instance, differing (and perhaps conflicting) opinions can be preserved and presented as alternative approaches to addressing deci- sion situations. Idiosyncratic organizational memory contains the valuable private knowledge of previous decision-makers, which will benefit decision-makers now and in the future.
