Tightwad computing: or, building a computing environment from things you might just have on your campus

Peter Hendee Brown · Journal of computing sciences in colleges · 2007

Building an instructional computing environment with limited institutional support and virtually no budget is a common problem in small, teaching-oriented schools. Our department is no exception. Over the last several years, we have successfully developed low- or no-budget approaches for the following: • Displaying student desktops in a teaching lab • Making class software and student directories available across the campus without involving the campus IT office, and • Using a hands-on approach to teaching networking without using a network for the purpose In addition, we have learned how to make many of these facilities robust both to required, short-notice upgrades and to network failure, again without requiring the involvement of the campus IT office.
